My old Toshiba laptop is broken and I need to get the hard drive out so I can get all the files off of it. How can I take it out carefully without damaging it though?

Laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L300

You will have to flip the laptop upside down. Once you do look for a cover that has two screws on it, and perhpas a small picture of a hard drive on it (it should look like a couple of spindles on top of each other).

Remove the two screws and pop the hard drive out. Once you have it out...

you can use a device like this IDE/SATA to USB

Ohh I agree that the way which the previous member has described is quite simple and effective.I also prefer that one.I want to share one problem of mine with my External HDD.I hope somebody will help me for that. I am using 'Transcend Portable Hard Disk 160 GB'..My problem is that "My dvd player fails to recognise external hard disk"..is there any drivers related problem or related to the External HDD of mine??Please suggest me the proper way for this.

The easiest way would be to somehow connect the new drive to the laptop while it is still using the old drive. You will need a 2.5" HDD enclosure. You don't need the actual enclosure but the connectors on the device so that you can connect the new drive to the USB port of the laptop. A hard drive is just a storing device. So if you want the old data transfered to a new one, you only need to move the old hard dive to the new laptop of course, only if your old hard drive still working..

Well, it is pretty difficult to get hard drive out from the laptop because you have to open its back cover.

If you are not sure about replacing the hard disk maybe you can bring your laptop to the store. Most of them would install it for free. My laptop hard disk was replaced like that,.

Its pretty easy to open the the bottom/back cover, most times its not even the whole back cover its just a cover for the hdd with 4 screws.

either way it just bunch of screws you are dealing with.

Also these days you can go to youtube.com and do a search such as.... Remove hard drive on E5400 laptop for example..... Use your model number of your laptop for the search and then you can watch the video that will show you how to do it.
