Windows Memory Diagnostic

One of the PCs you support is acting up—freezing, crashing, blue screening. Is some piece of hardware failing? Is some newly installed application causing trouble? Or could it be faulty memory? One way to find out for sure is with the free Microsoft® Windows® Memory Diagnostic utility. This tool will run a variety of tests on your PC's RAM to determine whether flaws exist in any of the modules.


Getting Windows Memory Diagnostic
To use Windows Memory Diagnostic, download and execute the program's single file—mtinst.exe—from oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp. Note that you do not have to install Windows Memory Diagnostic. The tool presents you with two options, as shown in the screenshot:

Create Startup Disk, from which you can create a startup floppy disk with the program.
Save CD Image to Disk, from which you can save an ISO image of the program to your hard drive. Then you can burn that image onto a CD and make it bootable using CD creation software. After you build your bootable media, reboot your PC and start the diagnostic from the floppy or CD.

Testing Memory
When the program loads, it immediately begins scanning your RAM. The Windows Memory Diagnostic tool starts in Standard mode, which includes 6 different, successive memory tests, each of which uses a unique algorithm to scan for different types of errors. A screen displays each individual test as it runs, listing its progress and the range of memory addresses being scanned. After those 6 tests complete, the tool runs another pass using the same tests and will continue running pass after pass until you exit the software. Typically, though, one pass should be enough to tell whether or not the memory is faulty.

For more exhaustive testing, you can switch to Extended mode, which runs 11 separate memory tests. There's also a Basic mode that runs only 2 tests, but, to be thorough, you'll want to stick with the Standard and Extended modes. If you run the extended test suite, it is suggested that you let Windows Memory Diagnostic run overnight.

After each test completes, the tool displays a Succeeded or Failed message. A Failed message is followed by details about the failure and typically indicates a fault with one of your RAM modules. Depending on your PC environment, the diagnostic may be able to narrow down a memory problem to a specific module.

In this case, an option to View errors by memory module will appear in the menu. This option can help you determine specific modules that are failing and should be replaced.

In the Advanced options screen, you can switch among Basic, Standard, and Extended mode. Here you also can turn off the processor's cache during the scans, which forces the tool to access data directly from RAM, ensuring more thorough testing. The System Information command lists the capacity and type of RAM installed in each slot.

Windows Memory Diagnostic supports x86-based platforms, including Intel Pentium and Celeron processors and AMD K6, Athlon, and Duron CPUs. However, the tool can address only up to 4GB of RAM and will not scan beyond that range.

You will also find a version of this diagnostic installed in Windows Vista® under Administrative Tools and on the Windows Vista installation media under the Repair option. The Windows Vista version does not provide as much visual feedback or as many options, however. So you will want to be sure to keep the standalone edition handy for the next time one of your PCs starts acting up.



This is a simple tool, once burnt to a CD to make it bootable it automatically starts the memory testing once booted to the CD. Very small program but works a treat....

Startup Delayer v2.5.138
The power to speed up your computer's startup process!

Can you learn another language in the time it takes for your machine to boot? Do you turn on your PC when you go to bed, so it's finished booting by the time you get home from work the next day?

When Windows loads it's Startup file, it attempts to load every program in there at the same time. Therefore if you have quite a lot of programs starting when Windows starts, each program will try and grab CPU time so that it can load.

Autoplay Repair
Actually this tool has been written to remove corrupted entries from Windows XP's autoplay. The background is that after an uninstallation of several applications like media players, some invalid entries still may remain in Windows XP's autoplay sections. These are visible every time a CD or DVD is put into the drive and the autoplay selection dialog appears. HDDerase.exe is a DOS-based utility that securely erases "sanitizes" all data
on ATA hard disk drives in Intel architecture computers (PCs). It offers the
option to run the drive internal secure erase command, security erase unit,
based on the ATA specification by the T13 technical committee. To run the
utility make a floppy, recordable CD-R, or USB DOS bootable disk; then copy HDDerase.exe to the bootable media. Reboot the computer with the floppy, CD-R, or USB inserted, and type "hdderase" at the system DOS prompt. Make sure to set the correct priority boot order in the system BIOS, such as first boot floppy,
CD-R, or USB depending on which media is used to run HDDerase.exe. HDDerase.exe must be run from an actual DOS environment and not a Window based DOS command prompt environment.

OK, we decided here at work that we needed a way to communicate with our department, through out the network. We did not want to have to go out to the Internet to do it either. We came across this handy software. It is a bit old (2006) but it works like a charm. It is customizable and easy to use. No server side required, just install it on each computer that needs it. It contacts are added automatically. You can also chat with more than one person at the same time, like a group conversation just by adding people to the conversation. You can choose to save history as well.

Guys this is free to use as a home user. I have used it to repair some computers over the internet. Works well. It generates a random connection ID and password which the user has to provide you in order to connect. You can also set it up as a service on your own computer to run every time you restart your computer. (you will just have to remember your session id and password)

OK, I have tested and used this software to clean up a lot of computers. It has worked just about everytime to clean up the mess. It is a free download, and updates are free too. There is a paid version, but aside from it only giving you realtime protection, scheduled scanning, and scheduled updating the free version is just fine. I think this is a good addition to anyones toolbox.

If you have a computer that is infected you can download the program onto a flash drive from another computer and also download the latest database file, install it on an infected computer and then run a scan. You will be surprized on how well this little program works for you.

Egg Timer

What is there to say, it's a simple digital timer, on the egg timer principle, counting down from a maximum of 100 hours, showing hours, minutes and seconds. Options are provided to change the colour of the display, and to force Egg Timer to remain on top of all other applications. Egg Timer can also be minimized, shutdown Windows when the time has expired, play a user defined WAV file or display a user defined message.

Due to popular demand, Eggtimer now supports command line parameters, which include the ability to start the countdown immediately, and preset the required time period. For full command line details, refer to the readme file present in the zip file.

This software is provided as FREEWARE, and will run on all versions of Windows. No install is necessary to run Egg Timer, just download, unzip and run.
